Who can take part

  • You are a woman age 50+ or a man age 70+
  • You have been in the ICU for 2 or more days and are not expected to leave the ICU on day 2
  • You needed strong ICU breathing or blood-pressure support for at least 6 total hours (for example, a ventilator or high oxygen/oxygen support)
  • Doctors expect you to survive this current hospital stay
  • You do not have certain bone diseases like multiple myeloma, metastatic bone cancer, or Paget’s disease
  • Your kidneys are strong enough (estimated kidney filter rate is at least 30) and you are not on kidney support dialysis
