This trial studies whether taking imatinib before surgery can shrink or control high-risk gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). If you qualify, you would receive imatinib as “neoadjuvant” (before the operation) and then move on to planned surgery.

Who can take part

  • You have a confirmed, primary (not spread from elsewhere) GIST in your gastrointestinal tract
  • Your tumor tests positive for specific markers: c-Kit (CD117) and/or DOG-1
  • Your tumor’s gene report includes test results for c-kit exons 9, 11, 13, and 17 and PDGFRA exons 12 and 18
  • Your GIST is “high risk” by size—stomach tumor bigger than 10 cm, or non-stomach tumor bigger than 5 cm
  • You’re age 18–80, and your overall health is good (ECOG 0–1)
