MRI breathing scan in NICU babies using a special gas

Who can take part

  • Your baby must be in the NICU as an inpatient and be medically stable enough for an MRI.
  • Your baby should be able to keep body temperature stable for the MRI, as decided by the NICU team.
  • Your baby must be 0 to 6 months old at the time of the scan.
  • Your baby needs a low-to-moderate oxygen plan: either nasal oxygen up to 2 liters/min, or higher support like high-flow nasal cannula/CPAP/RAM cannula as long as the oxygen level is not too high.
  • Your baby’s oxygen level (SpO2) must stay above 88% while on the current oxygen plan for at least 24 hours.
  • Your baby should not need recent sedation/anaesthesia, ECMO, or strong medicines that support blood pressure or heart rhythm.
