Study how obesity affects breathing and exercise in older adults

This study compares how body weight (higher or lower body fat) affects lung function, breathing during exercise, and exercise capacity in adults ages 65–75. You may be asked to do lung and exercise testing, but only if you meet health and activity restrictions.

Who can take part

  • Be age 65 to 75
  • Be a nonsmoker with no past smoking history
  • Have normal lung function, with no current or recent asthma symptoms
  • Not have significant mental illness and no history of major alcohol or substance abuse
  • Be able to safely do pulmonary (breathing/lung) and exercise tests
  • Have no uncontrolled blood pressure or known serious heart problems
