Who can take part

  • You must be 18 to under 105 years old
  • You have proof from a rectal swab or recent test of resistant gut bacteria (ESBL-E or CRE), or a recent ESBL-E/CRE infection in the last year (for ESBL carriers, that recent infection is required)
  • If you are assigned to take treatment by mouth, you must be able to swallow 50 capsules in a day with no swallowing problems
  • You cannot currently be on antibiotics, except long-term antibiotic prevention (at least 3 months in a year)
  • You must not be in the intensive care unit (ICU), and you must not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You must be able to follow study rules (birth control if needed, no other treatment trials, and consent to participate)
