Who can take part

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a breathing tube in the mouth or nose (oral or nasal intubation)
  • Be scheduled for a spontaneous breathing trial (a test to see if you can breathe on your own) before tube removal
  • Be planned for extubation (having the breathing tube taken out) after that trial
  • Not have had your tube removed without a spontaneous breathing trial
  • Not be planned for reintubation because of a secondary surgery
  • Not have a tracheotomy (a breathing opening in the neck)
