Who can take part

  • You must be 18 or older.
  • You are in the intensive care unit (ICU).
  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for at least 48 hours.
  • You have passed a trial of breathing on your own (spontaneous breathing trial).
  • You can have a swallowing test at the bedside before the tube is removed.
  • You or your legal representative must agree in writing.
