Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older
  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 48 hours
  • You passed a specific test (T-tube test) where you breathed on your own for a short time within the last day
  • You do not have a tracheostomy (a tube placed directly into your windpipe)
  • You do not have severe psychiatric or memory problems that prevent cooperation
  • You (or a family member if you cannot) agree to be in the study and you have not been in another study before
