Who can take part
- You are admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU).
- You were put on a breathing tube (intubated) within the last 24 hours.
- Your medical team expects you will need a breathing machine for at least 48 hours.
- Your oxygen and breathing support settings are not too high (oxygen level not above 70% and PEEP not above 15).
- There is not a serious bleeding problem at the moment of enrollment (very high INR or very low platelets).
- You do not already have an ongoing lung infection at the time you enter the ICU, and your brain pressure is not severely high or unstable.
