New test for detecting and predicting VAP in ventilated patients

This study tests if a protein in your blood (heparin-binding protein) can help doctors diagnose ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) earlier and predict how it will progress. It may be an option if you are on a breathing machine and have signs of pneumonia.

Who can take part

  • You must be between 18 and 70 years old.
  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 48 hours.
  • You have signs of pneumonia based on your symptoms and chest X-rays, and a score called CPIS is greater than 6.
  • You do not have an infection or sepsis when you first entered the ICU.
  • You do not have conditions like cancer, severe liver disease, or end-stage kidney disease.
  • You do not have a very low platelet count (≤20) or need platelet transfusions.
