Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 48 hours.
  • You have at least two signs of a lung infection: fever (over 38.5°C), low body temperature (under 36.5°C), abnormal white blood cell count, or pus in your lung mucus.
  • You are willing to have two bronchoscopies (a tube with a camera to collect lung samples) – one at the start and one after 3 days of treatment.
  • The first bronchoscopy must show a single infection with a specific bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, or Staphylococcus aureus) at a certain level.
