Study gut–kidney link in people with bowel or stone problems

Enteric Hyperoxaluria

This study looks at how problems in the gut can lead to kidney stone risk, especially in people with inflammatory bowel disease or after certain weight-loss surgery. Your participation may help researchers understand the gut–kidney connection and identify why stones happen.

Who can take part

  • Age 18 to 79 years (either sex and any race/ethnicity)
  • You must be either: (1) have inflammatory bowel disease, or (2) have had gastric bypass more than 6 months ago, or (3) have had a kidney stone event or stone on imaging in the last 3 years
  • If you join as a healthy control, you should have no chronic illnesses, no long-term medicines, and no history of bowel disease or kidney stones
  • You must not be pregnant or nursing
  • You must not have had antibiotics within the last 3 months
  • Your kidney function must be reasonably normal (eGFR 60 or higher in the past year)
