Brain scan study in severe sleep apnea without CPAP

Who can take part

  • Be 18 to 75 years old
  • Have severe obstructive sleep apnea (AHI greater than 30 events per hour) and not be on CPAP
  • If you are not in the sleep apnea group: you must have no sleep apnea (AHI less than 15) and no excessive daytime sleepiness (Epworth score less than 11)
  • Be able to safely do an MRI scan (no metal in your body that is unsafe for MRI, and you can tolerate the scanner; pregnancy must be ruled out)
  • Not have certain neurologic or breathing problems, and avoid medicines that can affect MRI brain signals (or discuss your meds with the team)
  • Be right-handed (left-handed people are excluded) and have no major current mood or certain mental health conditions based on questionnaire results
