Gentamicin antibiotic study for open tibia fractures
Treatments studied
Part of Injuries & trauma clinical trials.
This trial tests whether a gentamicin antibiotic approach helps heal certain open tibia (shin bone) fractures while lowering infection risk. It focuses on adults with specific types of open, mostly closable tibia wounds treated within set time limits.
Summary written for real people, not researchers, by Clin2.
Who can take part
- Be older than 18 years
- Have an open tibia shaft fracture with the wound type the study allows (OTA 42, mainly closable)
- Your fracture must be Gustilo-Anderson type I, II, or IIIA (not IIIB or IIIC)
- Get to the hospital within 48 hours of injury, and surgery within 7 days
- No prior allergic reaction to gentamicin or similar antibiotics

This trial tests a new way of giving antibiotics to people with severe open fractures in the leg, ankle, or foot. The goal is to see if it helps prevent infections after surgery.
This Phase 3 study tests whether a calcium/antibiotic “depot” released from an intramedullary nail can lower infection risk in certain open tibia fractures. It may help by delivering antibiotics right at the fracture area while the nail fixes the bone.
This trial studies a special nail for certain broken shin bones to lower the chance of infection after surgery. If you qualify, the study team will help you receive the antibiotic-coated nail and will follow you closely for about a year.
This Phase 3 study compares two ways to help heal a severe open tibia (shin bone) fracture and prevent complications like infection. If you qualify, you may receive antibiotic beads or a negative pressure wound therapy dressing after urgent wound cleaning.
This study follows people age 18+ who broke the tibia (shin bone) and are at higher risk for infection. It compares a standard internal metal nail to a special coated nail to see which one lowers infection problems and supports healing.
This trial tests a dissolvable antibiotic implant placed during surgery to treat long-standing bone infections (osteomyelitis) that haven't healed with antibiotics alone. It may help people who need surgery to remove infected bone.
