Who can take part

  • Be a child or teen in Tanner stage 1 to 5 (about ages 10 to 17)
  • Have one of these: sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, a confirmed SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection, or be a healthy control
  • For sickle cell disease: be medically stable with no serious sickle-cell complications, and get doctor permission for an exercise test
  • For cystic fibrosis: meet CF confirmation testing, be stable with no major lung/circulation complications, and have lung function not too low (FEV1 at least 40% predicted)
  • Have an average body size for age and condition (BMI in the average range) and no other health problem that would limit exercise
