Study of liver fat changes in kids with fatty liver disease

This study looks at how metabolism works in children and teens who have (or do not have) nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition where fat builds up in the liver. Participants may include healthy-weight controls, obese controls without NAFLD, and kids with NAFLD who are already scheduled for a liver biopsy for clinical reasons.

Who can take part

  • Be between 10 and 20 years old when you enroll
  • Be able to join as part of one group: normal weight control, obese control without NAFLD, or NAFLD confirmed by biopsy
  • If in the NAFLD group, you must already be scheduled for a liver biopsy for medical reasons, and the biopsy report must confirm NAFLD
  • Do not have other major ongoing health problems that can change metabolism or limit activities (like serious heart disease, cancer, other liver diseases, or major movement-limiting conditions)
  • Do not be pregnant or planning pregnancy during the study
  • Do not smoke, use illicit drugs, or have alcohol misuse
