Ultrasound or MRI to help prevent liver cancer deaths

This study compares ultrasound scans versus MRI scans to see which one better helps prevent deaths from liver cancer in people with cirrhosis. You may be assigned to one of the two imaging tests and follow-up visits to track whether liver cancer develops or is caught early.

Who can take part

  • Aged 18 to 75 years
  • Have cirrhosis (scarred liver) confirmed by tests or signs of portal pressure (like varices/ascites/encephalopathy)
  • Be at higher risk for liver cancer, such as current hepatitis C infection or a recent risk score indicating high risk
  • Have not had liver cancer before, and there should not be current strong suspicion of liver cancer
  • Be well enough to undergo scans and study visits (enough life expectancy, not in advanced liver failure)
  • Be able to get MRI with contrast if you’re assigned to MRI (no gadolinium allergy, no MRI-incompatible devices, can tolerate the machine, and can fit within limits)
