Who can take part
- You have nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (fatty liver with inflammation) and will be scheduled for a diagnostic liver biopsy
- Your body mass index (BMI) is at least 25.9, and you also meet metabolic syndrome features (3 or more), such as belly fat, high blood pressure, low HDL, high triglycerides, or high fasting sugar
- You drink less than 20 grams of alcohol per day
- If you have type 2 diabetes, you’ve been on stable diabetes medicines for at least 3 months
- If you take vitamin E or pioglitazone, your dose has been stable for at least 6 months
- You must be able to meet pregnancy and birth control rules if you could become pregnant
