Who can take part

  • You’re age 18 or older
  • You’re currently in the intensive care unit (ICU) in the hospital
  • Your doctor has diagnosed severe infection such as sepsis or septic shock within about 24 hours of the infection diagnosis
  • The infection is caused by an ESBL-producing gut bacterium that can be treated with study antibiotics (piperacillin/tazobactam or temocillin)
  • You (or your legal representative/family member) can consent to join the study
  • You must not be pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a known allergy to beta-lactam antibiotics
