Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 65 years old.
  • You are in the intensive care unit with pneumonia or a urinary tract infection.
  • You have at least two signs of sepsis: fever (over 100.4°F), high heart rate (over 100 beats per minute), fast breathing (over 20 breaths per minute), or abnormal white blood cell counts.
  • Tests show bacteria in your sputum (phlegm) or urine.
  • You are not pregnant, are not allergic to beta-lactam antibiotics, and do not have severe kidney failure (creatinine clearance less than 30 ml/min).
