Who can take part
- Be 18 years or older
- If in the trauma group: have a recent blunt or penetrating injury with a pelvic or long-bone fracture that needs a surgical repair (plates/screws or pinning)
- If in the trauma group: have high injury severity or major signs of stress/bleeding within the first 24 hours (as defined by specific scores or transfusion/shock limits)
- If in the elective hip group: be having non-infectious elective hip repair and be able to sign consent before surgery
- You must not be pregnant, a prisoner, or have certain major health conditions (like severe heart failure, severe kidney disease, prior bone marrow transplant, or known blood/marrow disorders)
