Who can take part

  • Be age 18 or older
  • Have either sepsis/septic shock, using Sepsis-3 definitions, or severe blunt trauma meeting specific injury/shock criteria
  • Not have conditions that already severely weaken the immune system
  • Not be on a treatment plan focused on comfort only or unlikely to recover from sepsis
  • Not be pregnant, and not enroll if more than 96 hours passed since suspected sepsis began
  • Not be too sick before arrival (bedridden most of the time) or have certain major injuries (like very severe brain injury or very large burns)
