Test sounds that check hearing in children with language delay

This study checks whether a quick ear-sound test (high-frequency otoacoustic emissions) can help understand developmental language acquisition disorders. Children with typical language and children with language delay will both be tested to compare results, even when hearing is “normal.”

Who can take part

  • Ages 15 to 17 are okay, but the language test must be done before your child turns 16
  • Your child has normal hearing on an audiometry hearing test (average hearing loss under 20 dB HL)
  • The language test shows a developmental language acquisition disorder (for the language-delay group)
  • For the comparison group, your child does not have a developmental language acquisition disorder
  • Parent/guardian and your child can give free, informed consent to join the study
  • No ear problems are found during screening (no earwax blockage, foreign object, or abnormal middle-ear or hearing test results)
