Who can take part

  • You are being admitted to the hospital mainly for a severe, sudden COPD worsening (exacerbation).
  • You have COPD confirmed by standard medical criteria (GOLD)
  • Recent lung tests in the last 5 years show airflow limitation (low ratio after bronchodilator and FEV1 under a set level).
  • Your blood gas results do not show respiratory acidosis (your blood pH is not too low with high carbon dioxide).
  • You do not already have a known diaphragm paralysis, and you can do the ultrasound breathing instructions (or are not on machines that prevent imaging).
