Who can take part

  • You are hospitalized mainly because of a severe flare-up of your COPD (breathing trouble getting much worse than usual).
  • You have had a lung function test (spirometry) within the last 5 years showing certain numbers: the ratio of FEV1 to FVC is below 0.70 and your FEV1 is less than 80% of what is expected for your age and height.
  • You have smoked at least 10 pack-years (for example, one pack a day for 10 years, or two packs a day for 5 years).
  • You do not have diagnosed diaphragm paralysis, and you can have an ultrasound (you are not on a breathing machine and can follow simple instructions).
  • You are able and willing to give written permission (informed consent) and are not pregnant.
