Who can take part

  • You are age 18 or older, and the injury is in your calf or hamstring
  • You are in one of these timing groups: new strain (<14 days), chronic strain (>6 months), or Achilles rupture (>1 year)
  • Your ultrasound scan shows muscle injury-related changes (not normal), including specific patterns for each group
  • You do not have certain health problems (like type 1/2 diabetes, connective tissue/rheumatic disease, or organ problems)
  • You are not a daily smoker and you have not used NSAIDs often in the last 3 months
  • You can have medical procedures involving local anesthesia and needles (no severe needle phobia)
