Stopping hydroxychloroquine in older adults with stable lupus

This study looks at whether it is safe for people aged 55 and older with long-standing, stable lupus to stop taking hydroxychloroquine (a medicine that helps control lupus) without their disease flaring up. If you have been taking this medicine for at least 7 years and your lupus has been quiet for a while, you may be able to join.

Who can take part

  • You are at least 55 years old.
  • You have had lupus for at least 7 years and your disease is currently not active (your doctor confirms you are in remission).
  • You have been taking hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) by mouth at least 200 mg every day for at least 7 years.
  • You are not on immunosuppressant drugs (like methotrexate or mycophenolate) or biologic medicines (like rituximab or belimumab).
  • If you take prednisone, it must be at a dose of 5 mg or less per day, and you have not had a lupus flare in the past year.
  • Your eyes were checked recently (within 6 months) for any signs of hydroxychloroquine-related damage.
