Who can take part

  • You are 65 years old or older
  • You are scheduled for an elective surgery expected to last more than 1 hour
  • Your surgery will use general anesthesia with an airway device (like a breathing tube or laryngeal mask)
  • You plan to stay in the hospital as an inpatient for at least 2 days
  • You can participate even if you have or do not have prior exposure to viruses like COVID-19, herpes (HS), CMV, or EBV
