Who can take part
- Your rectal cancer must be confirmed by biopsy (or clinical diagnosis) and be adenocarcinoma, including mucinous or signet-ring types
- Your cancer should be considered “locally recurrent rectal cancer” in the pelvis, confirmed by biopsy or clinical diagnosis
- You had surgery for the original rectal tumor and nearby lymph nodes
- Before this trial, you must have already had pelvic radiation or chemo-radiation, and then you received carbon ion re-irradiation after that
- You must not have had radiation more than once previously in the same treatment area
- Your last radiation must have been at least 1 year ago
- The tumor must be at least 5 mm away from key nearby organs (like the bladder or parts of the digestive tract)
