Brain stimulation and brain scans for hard-to-treat depression

This trial tests an alternating combination of brain stimulation and brain imaging to see if it helps people with depression that hasn’t improved with usual treatments. The goal is to find a safer, more effective approach for people whose depression has been very difficult to treat.

Who can take part

  • Be between 20 and 65 years old
  • Have moderate to severe depression (or persistent depressive disorder) with specific depression rating test results (HRSD-17 score 18 or higher)
  • If your depression is hard to treat, you have tried many depression treatments without enough improvement (including multiple antidepressants, at least one psychotherapy, and certain other options like ketamine/esketamine or ECT or rTMS)
  • Be able to have an MRI brain scan (no MRI safety issues) and have no major medical or psychiatric condition that would make depression not the main issue
  • Agree to skip if you have a history of psychosis, seizure disorder, active neurological disease, pregnancy, or substance dependence in the last 6 months
