Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older.
- You are having planned (elective) 1–2 level lower back surgery from L2 to S1, done from the back side while lying face down.
- The operation is expected to last 2 hours or less.
- You are not allergic to ropivacaine, bupivacaine, or other local numbing medicines.
- You can get spinal anesthesia or, if needed, general anesthesia, and you can understand and answer in English.
- You do NOT have reasons you cannot have spinal anesthesia (such as certain bleeding problems/anticoagulants, serious heart valve narrowing, bloodstream infection, very low platelets, high pressure in the brain, or infection where the needle would go).
