Peptide treatment to prevent or lessen kidney injury after heart surgery

This Phase 2 trial tests an LSALT peptide given around the time of “on-pump” heart surgery to help prevent or reduce acute kidney injury (a sudden drop in kidney function). It may help people who are at higher risk for kidney injury during or after surgery.

Who can take part

  • Be age 18 or older and having planned non-emergency coronary and/or valve surgery using the heart-lung “on-pump” machine
  • Have risk factors for kidney injury (especially kidney disease stage 2–3 plus at least one extra risk factor like older age, diabetes, hypertension, low heart pumping strength, or certain urine test results)
  • Not have acute kidney injury at the time the study starts (no kidney injury already present by their kidney criteria)
  • Not be having off-pump surgery, and the operation should not involve circulatory arrest or deep cooling to a very low rectal temperature
  • Have no severe kidney failure (estimated kidney function below 30 or needing dialysis), no recent/ahead-of-time treatment for aortic dissection, and no current sepsis or pregnancy
  • Agree to use effective birth control if you could become pregnant (and have a negative pregnancy test), and be able to give informed consent
