Who can take part

  • You must agree to take part in the study after being told about it
  • You are an adult (18 years or older) and covered by health insurance
  • You are in shock with a low blood pressure (average less than 65 mmHg)
  • Your early treatment plan includes giving 500 mL of IV fluids (saline or Ringer lactate)
  • You have not already received 2 or more fluid boluses since treatment started
  • You are not being treated for shock caused by heart or blockage (cardiogenic or obstructive)
  • You are not already on breathing machines (intubated or non-invasive ventilation) before the fluids
