Who can take part
- Be an adult (over 18) and be brought to the hospital emergency department after an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest
- Have a low chance of having an infection, based on the study’s infection definitions
- Be able to get consent for the study from you or your family/legally authorized representative if you can’t decide
- Have not taken antibiotics in the past 7 days
- Not have clear evidence of infection, cancer (unless fully cured/remission), pregnancy, or a severely weakened immune system
- Not be transferred from another hospital or long-term care facility, and not be in a brain-dead/vegetative state
