Who can take part
- You have confirmed rectal adenocarcinoma (a type of rectal cancer)
- You are age 18 or older
- Your rectal cancer has not spread to distant organs (no distant metastases)
- You have no prior radiation to the pelvis and no prior chemo or surgery specifically for rectal cancer
- Your cancer must be planned for total mesorectal excision (a surgical approach for rectal cancer that aims for clean margins)
- If you can become pregnant, you must have a recent negative pregnancy test and agree to effective birth control during the study and for a short time after
