Testing a device to measure breathing effort on ventilators

Who can take part

  • You are an adult (18 to 85 years old).
  • You are currently on a ventilator and were switched to pressure support ventilation (PSV).
  • You can be enrolled about 24 hours after that switch.
  • You are not pregnant (and not recently giving birth).
  • You do not have serious breathing or pressure-related lung problems, such as chronic obstructive lung disease, barotrauma, or diaphragm muscle problems.
  • You do not have certain brain or stomach/esophagus injuries or severe reduced alertness, and you are not expected to withdraw life support or switch to comfort-only care.
