Who can take part

  • You must have a current diagnosis of alcohol use disorder (AUD) confirmed by the study team’s interview.
  • If you have AUD: you must meet specific drinking amounts during a 30-day stretch within the last 90 days (different targets for men and women).
  • If you join for AUD: you must be willing to try quitting alcohol and work toward staying abstinent.
  • If you’re in the healthy group: you must not have ever been diagnosed with AUD or another major substance use disorder, and your recent drinking must be low (no “heavy drinking days”).
  • You must be able to read/write English, sign consent, and agree to blood draws for a genetic test (OPRM1).
  • You must be able to have MRI scans and have no metal/scan safety issues (for example, severe claustrophobia or metal in your body).
