Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You are scheduled for surgery to improve blood flow to your leg (bypass, endarterectomy, or patch angioplasty).
  • You have access to a phone for follow-up calls after surgery.
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder and can safely stop blood thinners before surgery.
  • You do not have any condition that would prevent spinal anesthesia (e.g., infection at the injection site, high brain pressure, severe aortic stenosis).
  • You do not have multiple sclerosis, known malignant hyperthermia, or a traumatic leg injury, and you are not pregnant.
