Who can take part

  • You have sickle cell disease (types SS, SC, or Sβ-thalassemia)
  • You are under 18 years old and weigh more than 22 pounds (10 kg)
  • You are in the ER with severe pain from a sickle cell crisis (pain score at least 7/10 or higher on a pain scale)
  • You have not taken strong opioids like morphine or fentanyl in the last 6 hours
  • You can use a nose spray (no major nose problems, surgery, or nosebleeds)
