Who can take part
- You want to try to keep your anus and are willing to have chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiation before surgery.
- You are between 18 and 75 years old.
- Your rectal cancer is within about 4 inches of the anus (stage cT2N+ or cT3-4 any N) and has not spread to lymph nodes outside the rectum or to other organs.
- Your cancer cells are a common type (not signet ring, mucinous, or poorly differentiated).
- You have not had any prior treatment for this cancer (chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy).
- You are in generally good health (ECOG 0 or 1) and have adequate blood counts, kidney, liver, and heart function.
