  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • Your heart stopped from a medical cause (not from an injury or accident).
  • Your heart stopped before ambulance or paramedics arrived.
  • A bystander used an AED (a portable device that can shock the heart) on you before paramedics arrived.
  • Your cardiac arrest is recorded in the CARES database (a national registry).
