Who can take part
- You are 18 years old or older
- You have a broken heel bone (calcaneus) that is a severe type (Sanders III or IV) or a less severe type (Sanders II) with problems like a very flat bone, open wound, chronic pain, or substance use
- You are able to come back to the study site for checkups for one year after surgery
- You speak English or Spanish
- You are not planning to have surgery with a large cut on the side of your heel (extensile lateral approach)
- Your body mass index (BMI) is not over 40
