This trial tests two different medicines to slow a rapid heartbeat caused by atrial fibrillation or flutter. You will receive either an oral pill (bisoprolol) or intravenous (IV) medication (diltiazem) to see which works better and faster.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter with a heart rate over 120 beats per minute.
  • Your blood pressure is stable (over 110 mmHg) and you are breathing well (oxygen levels above 94% on room air or with a simple mask).
  • You have not taken certain heart medications (beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, digoxin, or amiodarone) in the last 24 hours.
  • You are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or allergic to bisoprolol or diltiazem.
  • You do not have a recent heart attack, severe liver or kidney failure, asthma, or a history of cocaine or methamphetamine use in the last 24 hours.

This trial compares two common heart medicines (verapamil and metoprolol) to see which works better for people with a fast, irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation. If you come to the Emergency Department with a heart rate of 110 or more and are stable, you may be able to join.

This trial tests whether adding magnesium to metoprolol (a heart rate medication) helps slow down a dangerously fast heartbeat caused by atrial fibrillation or flutter. If you have this condition and your heart is beating very fast, this study may help you and future patients manage it more effectively.
