This trial compares two common heart medicines (verapamil and metoprolol) to see which works better for people with a fast, irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation. If you come to the Emergency Department with a heart rate of 110 or more and are stable, you may be able to join.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have atrial fibrillation with a heart rate of 110 or more, confirmed by an ECG
  • You are stable (blood pressure is 90 or higher, no shock, no fluid in the lungs)
  • You are not already on a heart rate control medicine (like metoprolol or verapamil) in the last 24 hours
  • You do not have other heart conditions like certain blockages or Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
