- You are 18 or older
- You are in the ICU either with shock (low blood pressure needing fluids or medicines) or without shock but needing a urine catheter as part of normal care
- You do not have chronic kidney disease (GFR below 60) or need regular dialysis or have had a kidney transplant
- You are not producing no urine, and do not need emergency dialysis right now
- You are not on a heart-lung machine, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and not under legal guardianship or in prison
