Can ifenprodil repair nerve coating in MS?

This trial tests an experimental drug called ifenprodil to see if it can repair the protective coating (myelin) around nerves in the eye and brain for people with relapsing-remitting MS. You may join if you have a delayed visual signal in one eye and enough remaining nerve fibers to potentially rebuild myelin.

Who can take part

  • You must be between 18 and 55 years old and have relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS).
  • One of your eyes must have a slowed signal on a test called visual evoked potential (VEP), meaning the nerve is damaged but not completely dead.
  • An eye scan (OCT) must show your retinal nerve layer is thick enough (>70 microns) in that same eye, so there are enough nerve cells left to try to repair.
  • You can be on any MS medication (including none), but you must not have had a relapse or optic neuritis in the last 6 months.
  • You cannot have certain heart rhythm problems, low blood pressure when standing, or take specific blood pressure medicines.
  • Women who can get pregnant must use highly effective birth control; you cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding.
