Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You are admitted to a medical or surgical unit or the intensive care unit (ICU) in the hospital.
  • Your doctor has ordered a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) – a special IV line that goes into a large vein near your heart.
  • You do not have chronic kidney disease (even if you are not on dialysis).
  • You are not in a very unstable or critical condition (for example, needing a breathing tube, very low blood pressure, or having seizures).
  • You can understand the study information, or you have a family member or friend who can help you understand and make a decision.
