Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older.
  • You had a breathing tube (orotracheal intubation) for more than 48 hours.
  • You do not have a brain or nerve condition (like stroke, Parkinson's, or ALS) that could cause swallowing problems.
  • You did not have swallowing problems before you were intubated.
  • You can eat at least some food by mouth.
  • You do not have head or neck cancer, past surgery, or injury that affects swallowing.
