Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older
- You are in the intensive care unit (ICU) and have been on a breathing machine for more than 48 hours
- If you have been taken off the breathing machine, the study check happens 6 to 36 hours after
- If you have a tracheostomy (a tube in your throat to help you breathe), you must be able to breathe without the machine for at least 6 hours a day and have a negative cuff-leak test (meaning no air leaks around the tube when the cuff is deflated)
- You are awake, can cooperate, have a strong cough, and can manage your own saliva
- You can give written informed consent
