Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 85 years old.
  • You are scheduled for open upper abdominal surgery (like stomach, liver, pancreas, spleen, or upper belly hernia repair).
  • You will stay in the hospital for at least 3 nights after surgery.
  • You will need IV pain medicine (opioids) for at least 2 days after surgery.
  • You do not have severe liver or kidney disease, and you are not allergic to the study medicines.
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
